Scope of Ocean Engineering, Courses, Jobs & Salary

Ocean engineering is a study of marine-based engineering that is, it is a study of the ocean and sea environment and technology and how the salt water effecting the watercraft and vessels. It involves the preserving the coastal structures from erosion, to develop energy resources, ocean mining, and petroleum recovered from offshore, to protect the ports and harbors, etc.Ocean engineering is a mix of mechanical, electrical, civil, and chemical engineering. To work as an oceanographer is a challenge as it requires varieties of backgrounds to work on.

Please find below the education information to become an Ocean Engineer:
•    A candidate can pursue a 3 years Bachelor’s programme in Ocean Engineering after completing their 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics as main subjects.
•    2 years Tech programme can be pursued after completing the B.Tech. programme.
•    Diploma programme can be pursued by a candidate after completing their class 10th examination.
•    To study for the B.Tech and M.Techprogramme the candidate need to clear their entrance examination like GATE.
•    The study of Ocean Engineering mainly focuses on the design and developments of the equipment and techniques use for exploring ocean and its resources. The students will study the ocean instrumentation, underwater data analysis, and various other topics related to ocean engineering and its mechanisms.

There are several graduate and postgraduate courses available for an interested candidate who wants to pursue a career in Ocean Engineering. They are as follows:
•    B.E. Naval Architecture
•    B.E. Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering
•    B.Tech. Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
•    M.Tech. Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
•    B.Sc. Ship Building and Design
•    Diploma in Ship Building Engineering
•    M.Tech. Marine Structures
•    M.Tech. Ocean Technology
•    M.Tech. Offshore Structures

Some of the Institutions for studying Ocean Engineering are as follows:
•    Indian Institutes of Technology-Madras, Kharagpur
•    National Institutes of Technology-Calicut, Surathkal
•    Andhra University College of Engineering-Autonomous (AUCE (A)), Vishakapatnam (Andhra Pradesh)
•    Indian Maritime University– Cochin Campus, Kochi (Kerala)

Ocean Engineering has a wide career scope with good potential. Commercially offshore industries like transport, trade, oil and gas, etc. are becoming important.
•    Ocean Engineers mainly get employed in engineering fields as designers and construction supervisors.
•    They may also get employed in the areas like consultancy (to give professional and technical advice), regulation, surveying and overseeing, research and development, education and training etc.
•    Ocean Engineers get also employed in government sector like they work on climate monitoring, environmental protection, oil recovery, marine transport, underwater vehicle development, etc.
•    The field of an Ocean Engineer is so wide and important that they can get recruited in nation’s defense also. Job openings are there not only in India but in abroad also for an Ocean Engineer.
•    They get work in offshore drilling establishments, military and marine navigation, Oil & Natural Gas extracting companies etc.
•    They also get employed as field engineer or site engineer where they do the inspection and testing of the underwater structures. They are also required to do the repair work in technology for underwater.
•    Ship and boat builders, offshore constructors, design consultants, and ships and submarines of the Navy and the Ministry of Defence also employ Ocean Engineers for their designing department. Equipment manufacturers also employ Ocean Engineers to design their products.

There are few skills that are required to become an Ocean Engineer. They are as follows:

•    An Ocean Engineer must be creative and inquisitive in his work.
•    He must have good communication skills both in writing and speech.
•    He must be a good team leader and manage his team efficiently as and when required.
•    They must have the ability to think analytically and problem solving skill.
•    They are also required to have good computer software knowledge.
•    They must have the ability to work under pressure which may keep them to late work hours.

An Ocean Engineering has a promising career and has an immense scopewhere an Ocean Engineer can do further specialization. They are as follows:
•    Mapping the sea or ocean floor – The work involves designing, building and check the equipment and programmes so that it can help to prevent shipwrecks which are caused by hitting sand bars or reefs.
•    Hydrodynamics – In this branch of specialization, the students learn on

The eligibility criteria for an admission in a Bachelor’s programme in Ocean Engineering are as follows:

  • The candidate must pass their 10+2 examination in Science subjects with Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • The candidates have to clear their entrance examination like GATE to take up admission in the B.Tech or M.Tech programme.
  • A candidate can study M.Tech. after completing their B.Tech. programme.
  • A Diploma course in Ocean engineering can also be studied by a candidate after completing their class 10th examination.

The job responsibilities of an Ocean Engineer include:
•    Ocean engineers are responsible for treating the ocean resources with importance like preventing the coastal structures from erosion.
•    They design and develop the marine structures and study the technology which is applied to the coastal environments.
•    They have to test the new technology for its stability and quality.
•    If the device gets damaged, the ocean engineers are responsible to fix it and repair it.
•    Ocean engineers also need to ensure that the design they create for the device should be safe, economic and sea worthy.
